DB Failing an MOT doesn't automatically mean your car has to stay at the garage. Whether you can legally drive it away depends on your current MOT status and the type of defects recorded during the test.
If your existing MOT is still valid
If your previous MOT certificate hasn't expired yet, and the vehicle has no defects classed as dangerous, you may be able to drive it away and arrange repairs separately. The vehicle must still be genuinely roadworthy at the time.
If your MOT has already expired, or defects are dangerous
If your existing MOT has expired, or the test identifies a dangerous defect, the vehicle must not be driven until the problem has been fixed, other than in specific circumstances such as driving directly to a pre-booked repair.
Understanding your fail categories
MOT failures are categorised by severity. Dangerous defects mean the vehicle should not be driven at all. Major defects should be repaired as soon as possible. Minor defects and advisories don't cause a fail but are worth addressing.
