What an MOT covers
An MOT is a legally required annual check confirming that a vehicle meets minimum roadworthiness and environmental standards at the time of the test. It's a pass or fail assessment against fixed criteria, and it does not cover the general mechanical condition of the engine, clutch or gearbox.
What a service covers
A service is preventative maintenance, generally carried out to a manufacturer's recommended schedule. It typically includes an oil and filter change, along with a broader range of checks aimed at catching developing problems before they become serious, or before they cause an MOT failure further down the line.
